And what of desire in this new year of a new century?

For the
fiction writers whose stories appear in this second issue of New Purlieu Review, desire takes on a hint of desperation.

In Lynn Levin's story, "Squid," an under-appreciated employee wants to hold onto what she's got.

Jasmon Drain's character believes he can keep his affair going through rapid fire texting in "Fifty Minute Messages."

The character in Mary Larkin's story, "Falling, or, Eden Revisited," thinks people desire wholeness, while the women in Kelcey Parker's "Three Women," seem destined to never feel whole.

The nine poets featured in this issue bring sense and sensuality to their poems of longing, awe and celebration.   The geography of their longing takes us from Harleysville, Pennsylvania to Old Dehli, and is triggered by lemons, flower bulbs, odd photographs.

Susan Firer and Cleveland Wall examine what others wanted in "The Happiness Tourist" and "Confetti," marveling at a past in which women wanted taxidermied hats and a present in which someone thought there might be a market for penis-shaped confetti.

And in this issue,
poets and artists commingle their visions.

Poet Carol Dorf has collaborated in the past with painter Terri Saul, whose haunting work appears in Images, as does the series of photographs, "you could think of desire as a spiral" by poet Lauren Eggert-Crowe.  Ditta Baron Hoeber, featured in Poems, is both a poet and an artist.

New in this issue is our
Forum
, where you are encouraged to discuss the theme (what do we want in 2012?) and the work that appears here.

Issue 3 ~ Healing ~ will be published in July 2012.  See our
submissions page for details.
